MBEs: on a Scale of 1 to 10 MBEs: On A Scale Of 1 to 10, The St. Louis Minority Business Council (SLMBC) has completed a state-of-the-art, online assessment tool to help Minority Business Enterprises (MBEs) grow their business. This is a major new development. Based on extensive research, this will prove to be a valuable resource for all certified SLMBC MBEs. By answering questions easily and efficiently online, business owners will immediately receive a score from 1 to 10 in various categories, called Critical Success Factors. These success factors include all areas of business from strategic planning and leadership skills to marketing and finance. Based on the results, the Council can recommend targeted training and education programs to improve specific areas. The St. Louis Minority Business Council awarded the Amos Tucks Scholarship to Edmond Brown, president of ELB Enterprises, Inc. ELB Enterprises is a diversified, minority-owned corporation of separate business entities that assist companies with construction clean up, safety and janitorial needs. The company was founded in 1993. The scholarship gives Brown the opportunity to participate in the Minority Business Executive Program offered through the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College. The program has been designed to assist minority business owners and principals in the growth of their business. Another Match for SLMBC Members Production Products, a certified SLMBC MBE, is a 25-year-old manufacturing company. It focuses on developing high strength plastics, textile products (such as gloves, web gear, protective clothing, shelters, etc.) and electronic assemblies (such as, circuit cards, control boxes, switches). With four plants in Missouri, the company was seeking a mentor relationship to help fully utilize its existing facilities and to further its growth. Wells Lamont, a Niles, Illinois-based manufacturer and marketer of gloves, recently announced a minority partnership agreement with Production Products. Wells Lamont is part of the $6 billion Marmon Group. The company has manufactured gloves since 1907 and sells retail and industrial gloves and other safety equipment in the Americas, Europe and Asia. Production Products and Wells Lamont have sighed formal manufacturing and distribution agreements to exclusively distribute Wells Lamont gloves and leverage their common strengths. With 160 employees and 360,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing space, Wells Lamont and Production Products will work together as mentor-protégé to enter new markets and obtain new customers. According to Bill Trainer, Vice President of Industrial Marketing for Wells Lamont, "Their [Production Products] qualifications and governmental awards put them in the Who's Who of Minority Suppliers." Their ISO 9001 certification, numerous governmental awards and experience in apparel manufacturing fits will with the Wells Lamont mission and goals, he added. In addition to its core business, Production
Products recently received a great deal of publicity for its "collective
protection" equipment that is specifically manufactured for various
departments in the military, including Homeland Security. As many of you know, this year marks the Council's 30th Anniversary. Our goal is to promote smart business practices that lead to excellence and growth, while helping to build valuable relationships with MBE's and their corporate customers. The past 30 years have resulted in a solid record of accomplishment, and we look forward to continued success. |
