News Flash! June 2004
_____________________________________________________________ The previous months have been filled with exciting activities at SLMBC, from the visit of Harriet Michel, President of the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC), the MBE Recruitment/MBE-to-MBE Reception and the 2004 Business Opportunity Fair. SLMBC received extensive positive press in the media resulting from these major activities. Michel made a presentation at a roundtable meeting with a group of St. Louis corporate leaders and at a joint meeting of organizations, including the host SLMBC. In both presentations Michel expressed the importance of diversity in corporate America. The MBE Recruitment and MBE-to-MBE reception was a unique experience at which 80 plus certified MBEs and potential MBEs came together to discuss the value of being certified with SLMBC and also the opportunity of doing work with and/or for MBEs. As a result of this event several certified MBE companies who were in attendance are now partnering on projects and doing work for MBEs too. The reformatted 2004 Business Opportunity Fair “Making Connections…Building Partnerships” was a new experience for the Council, in that it was a one-day event and the only exhibitors were certified MBEs. Michael Dell's breakfast presentation was done in an informal conversational manner (like a TV talk show) where David Steward asked questions and Dell responded. Therman Evans energized the group with his presentation. His energy and enthusiasm kept the audience awake and listening to the key point s of his presentation. Evans challenged the audience to work on the diversity issues during the year so that these same issues will not have to be redressed in 2005. Hopefully you received your survey of the BOF, completed it and return the completed form to the Council. The following certified MBE companies completed the three (3) year St. Louis Minority Business Council (SLMBC)/Associated General Contractor (AGC) Mentor/Protégé program. They were presented their certificates of completion at the AGC Luncheon meeting on April:
City Design Group, Inc. Bernard Simington, President. City Design's mentors were Bill Nash of McCarthy Building Group, Inc. and Craig Lucas of Kwame Building Group. A.L.L. Construction Anton Lumpkins, President. A.L.L.'s mentors were John Alberici of Alberici Constructors, Inc. and Bill Luth of Fred M. Luth & Sons, Inc. The University of Missouri-St. Louis, Pierre Laclede Honors College, offered one of their honor students James Woo to do an internship with one of the protégé companies enrolled in the Stempel Mentor/Protégé Program. Bryant Scaife of B.E. Scaife was the only person to ask for the student intern. The primary opportunity was to assist with developing an accounting system for the company. Bryant and James developed a strong working relationship, resulting in an invaluable experience for both parties. James not only did James assist with developing an accounting system for Bryant, he brought in some additional talent from his classmates who helped Bryant to create a new marketing piece and a new website too. James Woo completed his assignment and graduated in May. The Stempel Mentor/Protégé/Program is anticipating the availability of a student(s) to participate in the program beginning in the fall '04 school year.
